The Academic and Social Value of Ethnic Studies

Image
Emily Medeiros Blog: reflection/ thoughts           Good evening everyone and welcome back to my blog! Today, we are going to be talking about Ethnic studies and how valuable they are to today's education.       The research written by Christine E.Sleeter, talks about a previous graduate student who was turned away to further his education because his mind thought he was not as good as the rest of the students. With this doubt in mind he continued to explore other career options and did a tour in the military until he was talking to one of his friends who goes to a community college and introduced him to Chicano studies.          When the student realizes that he can further his education to become a teacher. He stresses how important it is to provide students with classes with exposure to other cultures besides the "American way." In a way, American schools have been blindly racist with not educating on al...

Emily Medeiros The Fours I's of Oppression

Image
Emily Medeiros  This weeks blogs: Reflections      Good Evening, welcome back to another blog post! Today, I watched a video on oppression. Luna Malbroux, spoke upon the fours i's of oppression which are " Ideological, interpersonal, institutional, and internalized."       Before watching this I was not exposed to the concept. This concept in the world is shaped based on gender and race. The world lacks an immense  amount of justice. Sometimes it is all by accident. The dominant group such as "white, straight and a male gender," has more biased views on the world just because of their background and exposure.  Also by accident we built these biases into schools and organizations by maybe not giving equal funding or equal pay. this could also be targeted to any social group, race, religion, and assets.       A personal experience I cannot say I have experienced any sort of violence or hatred as many others but I ...

Others Peoples Childern

Good Afternoon everyone and welcome back to my blog! Category: Quotes      This week was a heavy read. Today I read the book "Others Peoples Children" written by Lisa Delpit and here are a few quotes that really stood out to me  " In this country, students will be judged on their product regardless of the process they utilized to achieve this." This explains the tension in the classroom and education system. Students work so hard to achieve the outcome and the only thing that gets highlighted is the outcome. Take the SATS or any state mandatory testing from examples. Students work so hard, they attend study groups, buy textbooks, etc. but yet a score any lower than a 1000 is considered "bad" instead of highlighting all the efforts put into the test. State mandatory test should NOT define a student and their education growth. It creates  pressure to be the best which creates a burnout at a very young age. "This sense of being cheated can be so strong ...

Blog Post #2 Privilege Power and Difference

Image
Welcome back to my blog! Today's theme: Reflection        Today I read a sociologist's work, his name, Allan Johnson. His work was titled "Privilege, Power and Difference." Three main things we are exposed too in intro to teaching and taught all the way through teaching school. In today's blog I will be touching on some of the key points I found most interesting as well as recapping what Allan wanted to get across to his readers.            As soon as you are born. The doctor says, "it's a ..." and that's when your role in society starts. Even though you just made your first cry, you are already placed in a class. The classes include race, gender, sex, religion, skin color, etc. and unfortunately that issue is how America works. As Allan writes "this book cannot help having a white, straight, male, middle-class point of view, because that is what my background is." This quote stood out to me because it falls under the categor...

Other than that I like to cook, travel, as well as camping. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl but I decided to focus on history in my 7th grade social studies class when I was the only one who was excited about the class. ❤
