Others Peoples Childern

Good Afternoon everyone and welcome back to my blog!

Category: Quotes

This week was a heavy read. Today I read the book "Others Peoples Children" written by Lisa Delpit and here are a few quotes that really stood out to me

" In this country, students will be judged on their product regardless of the process they utilized to achieve this."

  • This explains the tension in the classroom and education system. Students work so hard to achieve the outcome and the only thing that gets highlighted is the outcome. Take the SATS or any state mandatory testing from examples. Students work so hard, they attend study groups, buy textbooks, etc. but yet a score any lower than a 1000 is considered "bad" instead of highlighting all the efforts put into the test. State mandatory test should NOT define a student and their education growth. It creates  pressure to be the best which creates a burnout at a very young age.

"This sense of being cheated can be so strong that the student may be completely turned off to the education system"

  • The quote stood out to me because it shows how not only the advocates of students get tired but also the students get tired of being ignore. This also shows how many kids, till this day, do not get the support they need whether it is extended time on an assignment or just support from teachers/guidance consolers

"This Statement directly concerns the display of power and authority in the classroom"
  • This quote is very tricky to full comprehend because you want the kids to respect you but respect also goes both ways and it is earn. Students need to trust that you are giving them your full efforts to teach them properly without overusing their power.

Key Points to discuss in class:
- The way kids learn and how their home life also moves into the classroom
