Blog #10 Sex and Gender

 Good morning and welcome back to my blog!


  
 This week's deep dive into the education system, was a video. This video  "Woke Read Alouds: They, She, He Easy as ABC,"   shows kindergartners learning different pronouns through the alphabet. The pronouns include "she, he, they, ze" and even the pronoun "tree." As kindergartners have a fresh mind, they understood the concept, but as an adult watching, I did not understand the pronoun "tree." As I did not understand the different pronouns this book introduced to me, I did more research in hopes to understand how to use these new pronouns. As a teacher my job is not only to educate the students academically but also to make my classroom a safe space. Although I do not understand these new pronouns, I will respect them, and if a student of mine, has a different way of identifying themselves that is amazing and I will respect that!


I am happy I both read and watched this video and thought of tools to understand new pronouns and that is the future of our society. Inclusive education policies in RI was also very important and informative for us to read because it helps protect our students and their identification!

Blog #7 Re-evaluating our classrooms.

 Good Morning and welcome back to my blog!      Today I read the preface and chapters 1 &2 of "Literacy with an Attitude."  This goes in depth with a new way of exploring our core classes such as: math, literature, etc. This book written by Patrick J.Finn, examines how we need engagement in our classroom to help the students fully learn and I whole-heartedly agree with this concept. The concept of not just throwing a text book with questions at the end but to come up with new and fun ways of learning. Although these three chapters I read were very influential I wanted to highlight two quotes I found interesting/ worthy of mentioning as well as adding my thoughts. The Academic and Social Value of Ethnic Studies

Today, we are going to be talking about Ethnic studies and how valuable they are to today's education.       The research written by Christine E.Sleeter, talks about a previous graduate student who was turned away to further his education because his mind thought he was not as good as the rest of the students. With this doubt in mind he continued to explore other career options and did a tour in the military until he was talking to one of his friends who goes to a community college and introduced him to Chicano studies.          When the student realizes that he can further his education to become a teacher.
